Yanna Klimenko Inhaber has been in the energy industry for 10 years and has managed biofuel logistics in Eastern Canada since 2020. , Lead Biofuels Coordinator, Imperial Oil I will also explain how do we use other cutting edge biorefining technologies to decarbonize our society. In this presentation, I will briefly introduce our new technology platform of using photocatalysis and photo-bio hybrid system for biomass valorization. , Assistant Professor, Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering, University of Calgaryīiomass is a key proposed component of several climate mitigation strategies, with substantial involvement of future energy and material systems. This presentation will discuss optimal strategies to utilize biomass resources in addressing climate change, including BECCS, BHCCS, and biochar. The second study applies this methodology to an analysis of biomass use in cement making and shows that biogenic CO 2 emissions can eliminate any potential GHG benefits. The first develops a method to calculate the GWP bCO2 associated with diverting residual biomass to energy use and shows significant climate impacts when slowly decomposing biomass (e.g., forest floor or landfill biomass) is used. Two articles we have recently published (Global Change Biology – Bioenergy) challenge this assumption. The low or negative cost of residual biomass from agri-food and forestry systems as well as landfill sites is of particular interest because the CO 2 emissions released to the atmosphere upon combustion are typically assumed to have a global warming potential (GWP bioCO2 ) of zero. Using Residual Biomass as an Energy Resource: Is there a Climate Change Benefit?Ĭanada aims to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, which has increased interest in using low-cost residual biomass from agri-food, forestry systems, and landfills as an alternative to fossil fuels. , Research Scientist, The Transition Accelerator Attendees will have the chance to engage with the panelists and ask questions, as well as interact with other guests during the networking sessions.īioNEXT is supported by the Government of Canada through the Investments in Forest Industry Transformation (IFIT) program.Ī complimentary lunch will be provided, please reserve your spot so we can account for all attendees.
